Hope KL English
It was 26 years ago that my daughter, Desiree Chan, who had been attending Hope Kuala Lumpur,
had been praying that her parents would come to know Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. Ever since
she became a Christian, each time she asked us to go to church, I would say “I’m going for my golf.”
It was my passion.
One day, at one of my golf games, I hit the ball into the woods among the trees. I went into the
woods to retrieve the ball, but as I was coming out, I was stung by a bee on my left earlobe. For
three days I just kept holding on to my ear. On the third day, I noticed I had a lump below the
earlobe. I felt afraid then because any lump below the earlobe would indicate cancer of the nose. A
CT scan showed that there was a tumour on my left salivary gland. A four-hour surgery was required
to remove the tumour. A couple of days after I was discharged from the hospital, Desiree led me and
Alicia my wife, to Christ through a prayer. Two weeks after that, she led us into praying in tongues.
It was also at this time that Desiree bought me a bible as a birthday present. In it she wrote “I love
you but most of all, Jesus loves you the most. Happy Birthday!” She also wrote John 3:16 and John
14:27 into her message. Since then, I have not played golf on a Sunday. I followed my daughter and
joined Hope KL and grew in my faith and love for the Lord. Hallelujah! It was from golf to GOD every
Sunday.
There have been many ups and downs in these 26 years, but I have been grateful for this family of
God firstly for my daughter’s spiritual growth that encouraged her to share the gospel consistently
with us. Hope KL has been the community that has kept me strong, surrounded me and my wife with
loving fellowship and has continued to build me as a disciple of Christ. I have stood solidly on the
promise of John 10:10 “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly!” Thank you, Lord
Jesus!
